The building is a city landmark of ugliness, but inside it boasts some of the most luxurious rooms in the Northern Dobrogea region. There’s a restaurant, a large, modern bar, heated swimming pool and a well-equipped fitness centre. Internet, air con, and wheelchair accessible.

Leif’s take: This is a popular and can be booked full year round so call ahead. They also run the Complexul Touristic Europolis from May to September (same rates), a resort-like hotel by Lake Casla, 2km outside of Tulcea’s city limits. Tour groups tend to cluster in this lovely site, in the thick of nature. Water-bikes and small boats can be rented and there are walking trails.

Leif’s take: Right next to the the train station. This is a two-star option with an on-site restaurant and pleasant rooms. Turn right when you exit the train station and cross the bridge to the island.
Casa Albastra Hotel

Leif’s take: About 100 meters down the road from Insula Complex, this a typical Romanian sport hotel (i.e. only for the stoutest of budget travelers). It’s a long, not terribly nice hike to the center.
Mini Hotel Pelican

Leif’s take: Up the hill from central Tulcea on a unlikely (and hard to locate) residential street, this hotel has basic, but comfortable rooms with a friendly, English-speaking staff.

Leif’s take: This is a mildly over-priced three-star business hotel, with big rooms, Swedish breakfast buffet, minimalist “fitness center”, sauna and massage services.
