Leif’s take: Last time I was here, the place was begging for renovation. The rooms are only so-so, but they’re loaded with facilities.

Leif’s take: Monica, your interminably good-natured, problem-solving host, is a licensed tour guide for all of Romania and has particularly encyclopaedic knowledge of Bucovina, Neamt and Maramures. Not surprisingly, she leads outstanding monastery tours. The comfy hostel occupies a flowery villa, five minutes walk from the bus station. A self-cater kitchen and laundry service are available.

Lary Hostel

Leif’s take: Occupying the old High Class Hostel location. Atmospheric location, great facilities, but kinda hard to get to.

Leif’s take: This fabulous three-star pension is a great value. The breakfast (included), is overwhelming. It’s located just 200 meters from the bus station. Internet and wi-fi available. I have it on good authority that ‘prices are negotiable for backpackers’. Ask for Mircea (mir-cha) the manager and tell him I sent you.

Leif’s take: The place is cheap and the small bright rooms have comfortable beds, refrigerators and very clean bathrooms. Some rooms have balconies. Internet available.
