Leif’s take: Inside the green-tea exteriors, this hotel (founded in 1555 as a restaurant, rebuilt in 1985) seems to be a fussy, burgundy and gold homage to Louis XIV at first glance, but nicks and scuffs reveal that it’s disappointingly maintained. Cosmetic improvements include monogrammed carpets and gold fixtures in the tiny bathrooms.

Two stars

Hotel 11 Euro

Web info: The hotel consists of 11 rooms, a restaurant, a night club and a guarded parking lot in the inner courtyard. Our hotel is located in a town wich seems to be forgotten by time, called Sibiu, situated in the Transylvania region in Romania. The hotel consists of 11 rooms, a restaurant, a night club and a guarded parking lot in the inner courtyard. Each room is decorated in a different style and to a high standard. We put at your disposal a bedroom decorated in a rustic style, a royal bedroom and some modern bedrooms. The rooms are equipped with 1 or 2 beds, a television set, a phone, shower and they are located on 2 levels of the building.

Leif’s take: The name suggests a dubious grasp on math, no matter the day’s exchange rate. This 35-room hotel (a former clothing factory) is slightly stranded, about 500m northwest of the center, but has perfectly passable, if cheap rooms. Second-floor ones have the best views. Only the business class rooms have wi-fi.

Silva Hotel

Web info: Each of the 42 rooms at this 2-star hotel have all the comforts and conveniences of home.

Leif’s take: The Silva is a chalet-style hotel overlooking green Sub Airini Park. Rooms are modern – about half have balconies – and parking is free, but it’s a long slog from the center.

Hotel Sonna

Hostels

Felinarul Hostel

Web info: Come and rest in our Transylvanian nest, Sibiu’s only boutique-style hostel and every day you can enjoy our organic breakfast for free. Owned and run by a Romanian/Irish couple, it promises a friendly welcome. The old house has been renovated with great attention to detail, with a mix of vintage Romanian furniture and crafts alongside modern facilities. The intimate cobblestone courtyard is a quiet oasis of calm in the heart of the old town, where customers and friends can hang out in the shade and sip a beer or glass of wine. The hostel also has chill-out zone, complete with library. An organic home-made breakfast is served each morning free of charge.

Leif’s take: A 14-bed sanctuary, roughly mid-way between the train station and the center. The Romanian-Irish husband and wife team have put a lot of thought into the design, including tasteful German, Hungarian and Romania influences. On Thursdays they whip up a Transylvanian Goulash, served with a palate-sterilising shot of tuica, naturally.

Flying Time Hostel

Web info: Located in the heart of the old town of Sibiu (Hermannstadt), the 18th century building is probably the best choice the budget traveler can make when it comes to fun, comfortable and cheap accommodation.

Leif’s take: In an 18th-century building designed to stay naturally cool, this place has ‘classic’ furniture and decor courtesy of an interior designer’s brain splatter. There’s great beds, a flowery inner courtyard, a cafe serving excellent coffee and a basement pub that gets raucous at the weekend.

Old Town Hostel

Web info: The hostel is located in the heart of the historical centre, in Piata Mica (“Little Square”), the oldest and most romantic of Sibiu squares, in a 450 year old building with Renaissance style arcades, at the first floor above the Pharmacy Museum.

Leif’s take: This simple hostel has the most atmospheric location in Sibiu. Dorms are better than the private room (which has four beds and no window).

Chess Hostel

Leif’s take: The airy dorms in this chilled-out 1930s yellow/brown house have lockers, as well as thoughtfully featuring clothes hooks, hangers, a personal light and a mini-shelf on every bed. The owners live on-site and will arrange bike hire and hostel bookings. The self-cater kitchen has coffee and tea all day as well as free shots of palinka for new arrivals.

Roth Hostel

Web info: Roth Hostel is located in the heart of the historic city of Sibiu. We will be happy to accommodate our future friends in this beautiful house that was build in 1873. This was recently complete renovated.

Leif’s take: Great location (just a few steps from Piata Huet) and friendly staff.

Sibiu Travelers Hostel

Web info: Our basic idea: giving you shelter in most comfortable, friendly way and making you feel welcome & at home, giving you a nice (included) breakfast and providing you a lot of free services for a real low price.

Leif’s take: This is a great property, with free laundry, internet, tea/coffee and great beds, but unfortunately it is not a great location, behind the rail station, so roughly a 20 minute walk from the center.
