The Wild West meets urban bohemian interior decor here will stun wine-fogged patrons into thinking they’ve been zapped to Brooklyn during the night. Extravagant breakfasts, vegetarian meals and daring plates like “turkey jam rolls wrapped in aborigines” don’t help to dull the sensation. Free wi-fi.
Str. Veronica Micle 1
This place is Italian-run and they do an admirable job executing proper Italian food, considering the local food sourcing circumstances. Bruschetta starts at 60 lei and pasta ranges from 80 lei to 350 lei. Dishes include standards like spaghetti carbonara and twists like tagliatelle with crab walnut sauce artichokes and cream. Second plates are filled with veal, turkey, salmon, prawns and lobster (350 lei for 450 grams). They do great pizza if you want a budget meal.
Str. Armeneasca 24
Outstanding dishes are produced from the open, fire-oven kitchen by attentive servers. Creative pasta dishes compliment the array of hearty meat and fish. Skip the outrageously-priced foreign wine for a Moldovan variety. Go down the atmospheric alley off the sidewalk.
Str. Alexandru cel Bun 83
Dark wood, leather and a friendly, affordable local-pub feel punctuates this place. The extravagant menu, on the other hand, is decidedly not local-pub-like, with items like omelets, pastas, tuna steak and crepes suzette. The entree prices are surprisingly reasonable, like the 135 lei (8.50 euro) thick and juicy rib eye steak (pictured). The cigarette smoke inside can get a little overwhelming, so grab an outdoor table if weather permits.
B-dul Negruzzi 6/2
‘To beer or not to beer’ says the menu, but if you’re here, you’ve probably already tackled that dilemma. This brewery-cum-restaurant has four delicious home-brewed beers and a superb menu, warming up with chicken wings and peaking at rabbit or chicken grilled in cognac. The relaxed ambience and impeccable service add to the charm.
Str 31 August 1989 nr. 78
Regarded as one of the city’s top dining experiences in terms of elegance and refinery coupled with reasonable prices. The French-style cuisine is succulent, with lamb dishes its specialty.
